This resource covers one unit of 8 lessons and engages students through Project Based Learning related to their daily lives. In addition to collecting data on their own environment, students will learn about how we use fruit flies in scientific investigations and students get to learn how to use simulation software to generate and collect data. While this article does not provide detailed lesson plans for each of the eight lessons, it does provide a purposeful overview and examples of rubrics for assessment of student learning. This resource is a great outline for a student-centered unit in a Human Physiology of Biology classroom.

This excellent article describes a series of lessons used in Project NEURON to teach students about the connections between the science of circadian rhythms and their own lives. Students develop models in the first few lessons using data about circadian rhythms and a free software program entitled NetLogo. Students go on to investigate light intensity in their own schools and other conditions in their lives. They even give a report to the principal about recommendations for their school environment.
