Join us on October 25, 2018, starting at 7:00 pm Eastern time for a web seminar featuring two professors from Montana State University. In the first part of the seminar participants will learn about Biofilms with Dr. Elinor Pulcini. The second half of the program will be presented by Dr. Gerry Wheeler and he will talk about the Next Generation Science Standards.
Part 1: From Slimy Dog Water Bowls to Encrusted Urinary Catheters: How Biofilms Impact our Lives
Abstract: Microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, and algae live in communities called biofilms. When microorganisms attach to a surface, they begin to produce what is called an extracellular polymeric matrix (aka slime). This matrix protects the microorganisms from disinfectants, antibiotics, antimicrobials as well as host defense mechanisms. Once established, biofilms are almost impossible to eradicate. Biofilms cost industry billions of dollars a year in reduced flow through pipes, product contamination, and equipment maintenance. In addition, a majority of healthcare associated infections are caused by biofilms. These infections are costly, often require increased patient days in the hospital, and can result in increased patient mortality. This web seminar will introduce you to biofilms and how we research them.
Part 2: The Progression of Practices
Abstract: The Next Generation of Science Standards (NGSS) features the importance of eight science and engineering practices. While students in grades K-12 should engage in these practices over each grade band, the practices themselves change in character as students mature and the science they are learning becomes more complex. In this section of the web seminar we will explore how practices progress over the grade bands.
