This lesson asks students to engage in a series of activities to understand the relationship among photosynthesis, respiration, carbon dioxide (CO2), and human impact on the environment. The purpose is to have students design, evaluate, and refine a solution to a real-world problem that reflects the impacts of human activities on the environment. The lesson has three objectives: to work with your team to design a CO2 capture device to capture and transfer CO2 from a model of a factory smokestack; to work with your team to design and construct the prototype of an algae farm; and to test your model and collect data for evaluation. It is intended to be implemented in the classroom after teaching photosynthesis and respiration or in conjunction with an ecology unit. A materials list, teacher background information, assessments, and outcomes are provided. This book selection includes the Table of Contents, Introduction, Contributors, About the Authors, References, Image Credits, and Index.
