In this chapter, ways are discussed in which language serves different social purposes. We highlight the social language of science as a unique hybrid that includes four modes—natural language, mathematical expressions, visual representations, and manual-technical operations. The chapter concludes with an example that illustrates the components of this hybrid language within the crime scene investigation (CSI) unit presented in the opening scenario. By developing the social language of your classroom, Emergent Multilingual Learners (EMLs) acquire a hybrid language. We recommend reading Chapter 1, which is included in this book selection and serves as an introduction and overview to Chapters 2–10. A materials list, teacher background information, safety notes, and standards are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Dedication, Preface, About the Authors, Our Stories, References, and Index.
