In this chapter, replace is discussed as one component of the 5R Instructional Model. Replacing serves to facilitate the development of more precise ways of meaning-making using the hybrid language of science. Replacements mostly involve a one-to-one correspondence of a word, mathematical symbol, visual representation, or manual-technical operation. They occur as teachers scaffold the development of the hybrid language through planned instructional activities or take advantage of spontaneous learning opportunities within a lesson. We recommend reading Chapter 1, which is included in this book selection and serves as an introduction and overview to Chapters 2–10. A materials list, teacher background information, safety notes, and standards are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Dedication, Preface, About the Authors, Our Stories, References, and Index.
