This case study features a summary about the history of the Slinky. In this lesson, students learn about the accidental invention of the slinky which is a coil spring (also called a helical spring). Students review different uses for coil springs and come up with products that incorporate coil springs to solve a problem. They consider how the slinky was discovered and work together to think about new applications for coil springs to solve real-life problems. This case could be used as a way to integrate engineering into a lesson on potential and kinetic energy, simple machines, and waves. A materials list, teacher notes, teacher background information, safety notes, standards, assessment, resources, and references are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, About the Authors, Acknowledgments, Introduction, Appendix, Image Credits, and Index.
