This case study provides a summary of the accidental discovery of Teflon and explains how Teflon has been transformed into one of the most popular nonstick coatings for commercial use. In this lesson, students explore the accidental discovery of Teflon as a result of a Refrigerator Gas Accident and learn about this plastic polymer’s structure and uses. They create a polymer plastic from milk and discuss the environmental concerns regarding plastics. Finally, students design a new application for a plastic polymer. This case can be used as a way to integrate engineering into a lesson on phases of matter, phase changes of matter, polymers, chemical reactions, environmental impact of plastics, and physical and chemical properties of substances. A materials list, teacher notes, teacher background information, safety notes, standards, assessment, resources, and references are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, About the Authors, Acknowledgments, Introduction, Appendix, Image Credits, and Index.
