This case study provides a story about the invention of Vaseline. Petroleum jelly, often sold under the brand Vaseline, is an inexpensive product that has been available to consumers for over a century. In this lesson, students will explore the insulating properties of petroleum jelly and brainstorm novel product applications for the substance. Often called a "Wonder Jelly" due to its versatility, there are many uses for petroleum jelly that have yet to be considered. By the end of this case study, students will be able to describe how petroleum jelly was discovered, analyze some of the useful properties of petroleum jelly, and design a new product that uses petroleum jelly to solve a problem.
