In this lesson, suggested for grades 3-5, students begin an exploration of energy by reading the true story of a Danish island that became completely energy independent, relying only on renewable energy sources including wind, solar, and biomass. They then make connections between energy, forces, and motion by building and testing pinwheels and Puff Mobiles, which use air puffs to simulate wind. This engineering challenge leads students into a study of renewable and nonrenewable energy sources. Before beginning the lesson, we recommend reading Units I and IV, which are included in this book selection. A list of materials, teacher background information, safety notes, standards, assessments, references, and resources are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Dedication, About the Author, Acknowledgments, Appendix, and Index.
