Watch Your Step: Should Distracted Walking Be Illegal?

by: Sami Kahn

In this lesson, suggested for grades 3-5, students are introduced to the problem of “distracted walking,” which occurs when people use their phones for calling, texting, or taking photos. They are introduced to the problem through videos of news reports and then explore reaction time and distraction through a ruler drop investigation. They also learn about the role of the brain and nervous system in processing and responding. Finally, they develop projects of their choice to send to local officials expressing their views about whether distracted walking should be illegal. Before beginning the lesson, we recommend reading Units I and IV, which are included in this book selection. A list of materials, teacher background information, safety notes, standards, assessments, references, and resources are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Dedication, About the Author, Acknowledgments, Appendix, and Index.
