In this lesson, suggested for grades K-2, students conduct a series of experiments on bean plants to determine what plants need to live and grow. They also compare and contrast individual bean plants to recognize the variation that can exist in observable traits. After learning about the parts of plants from which various human foods are derived, students brainstorm and take action on ways of addressing food insecurity in their school and in their community. Before beginning the lesson, we recommend reading Units I and IV, which are included in this book selection. A list of materials, teacher background information, safety notes, standards, assessments, references, and resources are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Dedication, About the Author, Acknowledgments, Appendix, and Index.
