The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is the largest general science organization in the world. Among the range of initiatives sponsored by AAAS is the Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion (DoSER) program. However, in this chapter the goal is to focus primarily on science engagement with sensitivity to cultural—and particularly religious—values and perspectives. Several recent projects are outlined as examples of how scientists or science educators and scientific or educational institutions can participate in substantive science engagement with religious individuals, institutions, and communities. The chapter concludes with an overview of how the lessons we have learned can be applied by science teachers to their classrooms. Teacher background information, references, and resources are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Preface, About the Authors and Contributors, and Index.
