This chapter is at the heart of the conflict around teaching evolution—the classrooms of middle and high school teachers. Our overall approach gives science teachers a way to move beyond conflict and toward a classroom honoring both science and students’ cultural and religious backgrounds. The eight strategies we developed and provide in this chapter offer practical applications in line with our overall approach and examples you can follow in developing your own strategies. At the end of the chapter, a list of resources is included to help implement these strategies. They will need to evolve but the core approach of teaching controversial science topics for understanding, not belief, will remain effective.
