In this chapter, we offer three vignettes of the practice of engaging in argument from evidence. These examples highlight the ways in which the components of engaging in argument from evidence—supported claims, evaluation and critique, and reconciliation—might change throughout students’ schooling. Engaging in argument from evidence is a powerful practice with respect to promoting equity in the classroom and scientific argumentation can support participation by all students. As discussed throughout the chapter, the practice engaging in argument from evidence is a key opportunity for students to engage in sense-making. A list of materials, teacher background information, standards, assessment, and references are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, About the Editors, Contributors, Acknowledgments, and Index.
