Students in Alternative Education and the Next Generation Science Standards

edited by: Okhee Lee, Emily Miller, and Rita Januszyk

Alternative education encompasses many nontraditional models, some of which are intended to target students at risk for dropping out. The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) raise the bar for all students. This magnifies the need for teachers in alternative education to foster engagement and increase exposure to rigorous science. The vignette presented in this chapter is a high school chemistry class in an alternative education setting for dropout prevention. It highlights five classroom strategies that are particularly effective for students in alternative education. Teacher background information, standards, assessments, and references are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, About the Editors, Contributors, Preface, and Index.
