Core Idea ESS1: Earth’s Place in the Universe

edited by: Ravit Golan Duncan, Joseph Krajcik, and Ann E. Rivet

Earth and space sciences consists of three disciplinary core ideas (DCIs) that help to explain a wide variety of Earth-related phenomena, including the motion of the planets, changes in climate, and the shape of Earth structures. In this chapter, the DCI engages students in increasingly large spatial and temporal scales as they move from elementary to middle to high school. Supporting student learning across the grades begins with supporting their connections to what they can observe and experience but then quickly moves out to scales that require models, simulations, and representations within which to interact and make sense of the phenomena. Students will need support in engaging in the types of spatial reasoning required to construct scientific explanations in this DCI. They will also need to begin integrating other DCIs as they move up the grades, including those about gravitational forces, nuclear processes, and energy. A list of materials, teacher background information, assessment, standards, safety, and references are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Foreword, Acknowledgments, About the Editors, Contributors, Appendix, Image credits, and Index.
