Stories of Places We Can’t See But Can Hear

by: Russ Colson and Mary Colson

This chapter focuses on reading the earth with seismic waves and identifies several important aspects of authentic science, including asking questions, figuring out problems that you don’t already know the answer to, and putting your results into the context of questions of wider interest. Can our classrooms become places where students make sense of the world in an authentic way—where students ask questions not driven by the teacher or the textbook, where students use the practices of science to make discoveries and construct understanding that go beyond reinforcing already-learned concepts? Can students, like scientists, apply their new understanding to problems in the broader world? An approach for doing this is stated in the “Suggestions for Designing an Activity” section. A materials list, teacher background information, and outcomes are provided. This book selection includes the Table of Contents, Acknowledgments, About the Authors, About the Book, Introduction, and Index.
