Stories of Places We Can’t Go But Can See

by: Russ Colson and Mary Colson

This chapter focuses on reading the earth with light. Distance learning has a long history. In this chapter, the “Suggestions for Designing an Activity” section offers a way to start with observations in building a model for phases of the Moon. The study of the phases of the Moon provides an opportunity to engage students in using a model to explain how things work and predict future observations. Some examples of this approach are provided in this chapter. An activity is also provided that can give students an understanding of how people thousands of years ago figured out the Moon’s phases and what these phases tell us about our universe. A materials list, teacher background information, and outcomes are provided. This book selection includes the Table of Contents, Acknowledgments, About the Authors, About the Book, Introduction, and Index.
