Teacher as Mentor, Practitioner, and Scholar

by: Russ Colson and Mary Colson

This chapter examines mentoring student explorations as a fellow scholar and practitioner of science. The mentor does not give students assignments and then step back and let students sink or swim. The mentor guides, advises, nudges, and, most important, shows students how science can be done. The mentor is an active participant in exploration. Mentoring and coaching are closely aligned, but to be most effective you need to be a scholar. Approaching science teaching as a coach and mentor, practitioner and scholar, is a journey that is not traveled in a single day. Take that journey one day, one lesson, and one chapter at a time. A materials list, teacher background information, and outcomes are provided. This book selection includes the Table of Contents, Acknowledgments, About the Authors, About the Book, Introduction, and Index.
