Scientists and Engineers Are PERSISTENT (Grades 3–5)

by: Donna Farland-Smith and Julie Thomas

In this lesson, students learn that scientists and engineers are persistent. They read about engineer John Roebling in the book The Brooklyn Bridge: The Story of the World’s Most Famous Bridge and the Remarkable Family That Built It. After reading, they create a model of a suspension bridge and make learning connections to the Brooklyn Bridge—the suspension bridge built by John Roebling and his family. This selection highlights the practice of constructing explanations (science) and designing solutions (engineering), and it includes the Table of Contents, Foreword, Acknowledgments, About the Authors, and Index.
