Scientists and Engineers Are FEARLESS (Grades 3–5)

by: Donna Farland-Smith and Julie Thomas

In this lesson, students learn that scientists and engineers are fearless. They read about Sylvia Earle in the book Life in the Ocean: The Story of Oceanographer Sylvia Earle. After reading, students observe photographs of two sawfish nostrums (bills) and use evidence to debate whether they are from the same species (adult and baby) or different species. This selection highlights the practice of engaging in argument from evidence, and it includes the Table of Contents, Foreword, Acknowledgments, About the Authors, and Index.
