In this lesson, students continue to follow the story of Chris through the process of the scientific method as they gather important information about brain function and drug use. Students will also be challenged to develop an explanation of why drug addiction is considered a disease of the brain. After completing this lesson, students will be able to
• demonstrate the process of message transfer between specialized neuron cells;
• explain the role of neurotransmitters in message transmission;
• illustrate how drugs of abuse interfere with the communication process between neurons;
• define disease and formulate an explanation of why drug addiction is considered a brain disease; and • explain the difference between drug abuse and addiction.
