In this very thorough examination of groundwater flow for the high school level, students learn to think three-dimensionally about groundwater, and some of the factors that enter into movement of groundwater. This is a very effective modeling exercise, if students are advanced enough to handle the procedural issues. The model itself would be challenging to build; to have one for each group of 5 students in a typical classroom would be challenging, especially if it entails drilling holes in aquariums. A less rigorous, but similar activity to use with earth science and late middle school might be 'A Grave Mistake' included in Project WET. I would also have preferred a more inquiry-based approach to covering this topic.
