This chapter outlines certain procedures used by foresters to measure the amount or volume of timber (primarily sawlogs) in a forest stand. This process is called timber inventory. Just as a storeowner keeps track of the inventory of stock on hand at a particular time, so does a forest landowner keep track of timber stock. Additionally, the landowner may use the data from an inventory to prescribe certain silvicultural treatments that can promote optimal timber growth.
