For children to progress and develop more robust scientific models, they need to evaluate their simple models against the evidence available to them in science, then choose to modify or even abandon their current models in favor of ones that are more consistent with the evidence. There are rational explanations for why children hang on to their questionable beliefs. The authors address a number of these reasons in this chapter as well as criteria for good scientific explanations.
