Parents As Partners

by: Linda Froschauer and Mary L. Bigelow

Although teachers have a huge influence on students, no one can have the effect on students that parents can. No matter the student’s age, the approval of parents is a fundamental need of every child and a powerful motivator. Parents can support you in providing time for one-to-one academic help as well as discipline follow-through. Contacting parents early and often is key to developing a positive working relation- ship. It’s never too early in the year to let them know that you are aware of their child’s strengths and weaknesses and that you care about their student’s success. This chapters purpose to give teachers ideas of how to foster communication with parents from phone calls, to face-to-face conferences, Back To School Night, and other ways to create a positive partnership with parents.
