This book chapter introduces a creative, hands-on activity to help students understand the layers of the Earth. Using sandwiches, students explore how geologists determine relative age based on layer and take core samples of the "sedimentary sandwich" to study rock layers. The article includes reproducible student response sheets. In addition to the student activity, this chapter also includes a teacher reference section with information on preconceptions, interdisciplinary ideas, differentiated instruction, and assessment ideas. I'm excited to try this activity with my students soon!
