Atwood's marvelous machines

by: Arthur Eisenkraft and Larry D. Kirkpatrick

This chapter presents an example of a classic physics problem known as Atwood’s machine. In the lab it serves as a means of achieving a constant acceleration of any value less than g. Can you suggest a means of achieving a constant acceleration greater than g? Atwood’s machine is often modified to test students’ understanding of the applications of Newton’s laws. This chapter consists of two modifications of Atwood’s machine.
