Moving From the NGSS to Instruction

by: Harold Pratt

This chapter outlines a dynamic, active process for understanding how each component of a standard interacts with the other components by developing an instructional sequence starting with one or possibly two performance expectations. It is a roadmap but not a fully detailed manual for developing instruction. It is generally accepted that designing instruction or instructional material begins with the selection of the endpoint, or desired results of the instruction, and working backward through an instructional sequence to the beginning knowledge students have coming into the instruction. The process outlined here draws modestly from the concepts in that backward design process. A summary of the process for moving from the NGSS to instruction is provided at the end of this chapter.
