Blick’s Pick

Book dominos:

Electron microscopes are nothing new, but this is the first "movie" I've seen built out of hundreds of electron microscope images. The creator, Stefan Diller, electronically stitched together the images to create these "fly by" films of a honeybee, a glassing butterfly, and a tomato plant. Structures that are invisible to the naked eye are revealed in amazing detail in these "nano flights." YouTube link

Today in Science History

On August 1 in 1774, Joseph Priestley isolates oxygen in the lab in his home in Calne, England. Exactly 100 years later (1874), the city where he once lived and worked, Birmingham, England, unveils a monument to Priestley and his discovery of oxygen. Little is made of the fact that a mob in Birmingham destroyed his home, lab, and library in 1791.
