Universal Design for Learning

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a set of principles used in curriculum design that attempts to make learning opportunities accessible for all students. Based on an architectural concept, UDL capitalizes on the fact that making learning accessible for the most students improves learning outcomes for all students.

UDL has three main principles which are used in curriculum design:

  • Multiple means of representation—presenting information in different ways;
  • Multiple means of expression—allowing students to express knowledge in different ways; and
  • Multiple means of engagement—stimulate learning and engagement in different ways.

For more information on UDL, visit the National Center on UDL at www.cast.org.
