Abstract
In this case study, students read a conversation between “Lee” and “Sam” as they work together on a class-presentation assignment. Their conversation pertains to a published study investigating whether group drumming can reduce individuals’ depression. Students analyze and critically evaluate this scientific study and compare it to how the study is presented online. Working in small groups, students apply research methods constructs to the published study and decide what information is important for evaluating its internal and external validity. Student answers are then discussed with the entire class. A homework assignment requires students to read the published article, discern whether certain information is included, and then critique the research by investigating its strengths and weaknesses. In the subsequent class session, students take part in a whole-class discussion regarding what they discovered about the published study and their ideas about its strengths and weaknesses. The case is best suited for an upper-division or master’s-level psychology course in research methods but could also be used in research methods courses in other social or behavioral sciences.
