I Can’t See Things Clearly

Abstract

This case study is designed to help students learn about the anatomy and physiology of the eye and its relationship to the visual cortex. The case tells the story of a 70-year-old female diagnosed with optic neuritis. As students work their way through the case, they draw on their knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system and the sense of vision to answer a series of questions designed to increase their understanding of this disorder. By focusing on the relationship between the brain and vision, students identify the cause of the ensuing blurry vision experienced by the patient and describe the sensory pathway of vision. A review of eye examination results assists students in the identification of the structures, muscles, and functions of the eye. This case study was developed for an advanced anatomy and physiology course taken by upper-division undergraduates.
