District Professional Learning Packages

Something we talk about a lot with districts is what it takes to set curriculum up for success… whether you're in the process of selecting new materials, or already working to implement something.

In either case, there's usually a significant amount of time and energy that goes into that decision. Teams are thoughtful about it… reviewing options, looking at evidence, trying to make the best choice for their teachers and students.

And with that comes a certain level of expectation… that this is going to make a meaningful difference in classrooms.

What we see pretty consistently is that the impact doesn't come from the materials themselves. It comes from what happens once those materials are actually in classrooms.

And that's where things can start to break down a bit. Not because the materials aren't strong, but because using them well often requires a shift in instruction… and that doesn't happen automatically for everyone.

Sometimes that shows up later… teachers not using the materials as intended, feeling frustrated, or not seeing the changes in student learning that were expected.

So a big part of our work is either helping teams build that foundation early, so they're set up for success from the start… or supporting them once they're in it, to strengthen implementation and keep that work moving in the right direction.

The goal in both cases is the same… helping teachers feel confident using the materials in practice, so the time, energy, and thought that went into that decision actually leads to the impact districts were hoping for.

One of the conversations we find ourselves having pretty often is around the difference between curriculum and instruction.

A lot of professional learning tied to curriculum is focused on helping teachers understand the materials, how they're organized, how to navigate them, what resources are available.

And that's important. But it only gets you so far.

The way we tend to describe it is… it's a little like buying a car and learning all the features. You know where everything is, you understand how it works, but that's different from actually learning how to drive.

What really determines whether those materials are effective is what's happening in the classroom. How teachers are facilitating discussions, how students are engaging, who's actually doing the thinking.

So we spend a lot of time on that instructional side, because that's where the real shift happens.

When new materials are introduced, one thing that doesn't always get talked about is that it actually increases the load on teachers, at least initially.

They're learning something new, they're trying to adjust their planning, and at the same time they're still managing everything else that comes with being in the classroom.

And without the right support, even really strong curriculum can start to feel overwhelming. We hear that a lot… teachers feeling like they're trying to figure it out on their own.

What we've seen work better is giving teachers multiple ways to engage over time. Not just a single training, but opportunities to revisit, to ask questions, to see what it looks like in practice, and to get support when they actually need it.

That's usually what helps build confidence and momentum, instead of frustration.

A lot of the leaders we talk to aren't just thinking about science.

They're thinking about things like teacher retention, student engagement, and preparing students with skills they'll actually need beyond school.

What's interesting is that when instruction shifts toward students doing more of the thinking… problem solving, using evidence, working through ideas… it naturally supports those larger goals.

So while this work often starts in science, the impact tends to be much broader.

Workshops and conferences can be really powerful experiences. They build energy, they introduce new ideas, and they give teachers something to be excited about.

But one thing we hear pretty consistently is that when teachers go back into their classrooms, it can be hard to translate that into day-to-day practice.

Not because they don't want to, but because the reality of the classroom is complex, and it's easy to fall back into what's familiar.

So we tend to think about professional learning a little differently. Not as a single event, but as something that happens over time.

That might look like follow-up sessions, mentoring, or just having space for teachers to come back together and reflect on what they're trying.

That ongoing support is usually what makes the difference between something that was inspiring… and something that actually sticks.

One of the bigger shifts we're supporting right now is moving from more traditional, lecture-based instruction toward a model where students are actually doing more of the thinking.

And what's interesting is that even in districts that have adopted really strong, NGSS-aligned materials, we still see a lot of classrooms that lean toward explanation and coverage.

That's not really a surprise. It's how most of us were taught, and it's what many teachers are most comfortable with.

But what we're working toward is something a little different. Classrooms where students are asking questions, exploring ideas, using evidence, and really making sense of how the world works.

That shift doesn't happen overnight. It takes time, practice, and support.

And that's where we tend to spend a lot of our time with teams.

When we look across districts that are really starting to see progress with implementation, one of the biggest differences is how they think about the work.

They're not treating curriculum adoption as a one-time decision. They're thinking about it as a longer-term process.

They're creating space for teachers to try things out, to reflect on what's working, and to build consistency over time.

And usually, they're pairing strong materials with some form of ongoing support, whether that's coaching, mentoring, or structured collaboration.

It's not necessarily more complicated, but it is more intentional.

And that consistency over time is what really seems to move the needle.

A lot of the leaders we talk to are juggling competing priorities… and sometimes that means the focus is on things like math, literacy, or overall performance.

We hear that pretty often… "this all sounds great, but right now our priority is something else."

And that makes sense.

What's been interesting, though, is that the kind of instruction we're talking about… where students are making sense of ideas, using evidence, engaging in discussion… those are the same skills that support success in literacy and math as well.

Students are reading closely, making claims, supporting their thinking, working through problems… it's not separate from those priorities, it actually reinforces them.

So while the work may sit within science, it's really helping build the kinds of skills and instructional practices that show up across the day.

And that's often where it starts to feel more connected, even if science wasn't the initial focus.

If you're using your own materials, or if things look a little different from classroom to classroom, that's actually a really common place for districts to be.

In a lot of cases, teachers are building or adapting lessons themselves, and there's a lot of thought and effort behind that.

What we hear pretty often, though, is that teams want to see more consistency… more student engagement… more students actually doing the thinking in the classroom.

But when you look at the materials, or even at student work, they don't always fully support that yet.

So you end up with a bit of a gap between what you're hoping to see instructionally and what's happening day to day.

That's where we tend to support.

Sometimes that means looking at materials together and thinking about how they can better support that kind of learning. Sometimes it's looking at student work and asking, "what are students actually being asked to do here?"

And sometimes it's just helping teachers take what they already have and use it in a way that gets more of that student thinking and engagement you're aiming for.

So even if you're not adopting something new, there's still a lot of opportunity to strengthen what's already in place and move things in a more consistent direction.

At some point in the conversation, this usually comes up… what does NSTA actually do to support?

And the answer is, it really depends on where a team is.

Some districts are still exploring or getting ready to adopt new curriculum. Others have already adopted something and are trying to figure out how to implement it more effectively.

Sometimes the focus is on shifting instruction, moving away from more lecture-based approaches toward something that's more student-centered. And sometimes it's about building buy-in and consistency across a team.

We don't really see those as separate challenges. They tend to be connected.

So our role is to come alongside teams and support that process, wherever they're starting from, and help them build toward something that's sustainable.

One thing that's really important to us as an organization is that we're mission-driven.

Our focus is on supporting educators, because we know that when teachers feel supported, that's what ultimately impacts students.

And part of that is recognizing that no two districts are exactly the same. The challenges, the priorities, the context — it all varies.

So we don't take a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, we try to understand what's actually happening in your schools and classrooms, and then adapt our support to fit that.

We're not coming in with a fixed model. We're bringing resources and experience, and then shaping that around what your team actually needs.

If you're wondering what a partnership with NSTA actually looks like, it usually starts pretty simply.

Often there's some kind of shared experience, like a workshop, where teams can build a common understanding and start to see what this looks like in practice.

From there, if it makes sense, we layer in additional support. That might be mentoring, coaching, or follow-up sessions that help teachers continue the work.

Over time, it becomes less about a single event and more about building something that supports implementation and instructional change.

And the goal is always to make that sustainable within your system.

There are a lot of organizations doing professional learning, so it's a fair question… why NSTA?

One of the differences is that we're really grounded in both the research and what's actually happening in classrooms.

We're working with districts across the country, so we're able to see patterns… where things tend to get stuck, what's gaining traction, and what actually helps teams move forward. At the same time, we also have strong local and regional partnerships, so we're not just looking at this from a distance — we're able to understand what's happening on the ground in different contexts.

Another piece that's a little different is how we think about supporting educators over time. We know not everyone engages or learns in the same way, or at the same moment.

Some educators might connect through a workshop experience, others through mentoring or small group conversations. Some prefer something they can access on their own time, like a journal, a webinar, or other resources they can come back to when they need it.

So instead of a single entry point, we try to create multiple ways for teams to engage over time, in ways that actually fit how they work and learn.

And because we're mission-driven, the focus isn't just on pushing a product… it's really about supporting educators in ways that are meaningful and actually usable in their classrooms.
