Editorial: Gooey-Gosh

Journal of College Science Teaching—January/February 2009

Today, the majority of the leadership among science educators of all levels recognizes that inquiry learning is necessary to build this basis for everyone. Lectures on the dry facts of nomenclature can’t compete with the effectiveness of a well-constructed investigation where students actively engage both physically and mentally with the question at hand. We all need to play with our discipline’s “gooey-gosh” to be effective in our thinking. Given that this generation is far less engaged, on average, with the natural world either through necessity or play, it’s a critical factor toward our success as science educators that we provide experiences with the natural world for our young people.
