Learning Genetics with Paper Pets

Science Scope -- March 2006

By the end of the eighth grade, students are expected to have a basic understanding of the mechanisms of basic genetic inheritance (NRC 1996). However, these concepts can be difficult to teach. To make these concepts easier for students to grasp, have them create Paper Pets to examine the inheritance of genetic traits over multiple generations, the role and effects of genetic mutations, the origin and impact of genetic diseases, and the methods used to predict and track the inheritance of genetic traits.
