Power Demand for Walking on the Treadmill: An Academic Exercise Integrating Concepts of Physics and Human Physiology

Journal of College Science Teaching—February 2000

This paper presents a mathematical model for walking on the treadmill that calculates the minimum power required for walking on the level at a constant speed and relates it to the pace length. The calculation includes both the horizontal and vertical motions plus the rotation of the arms and legs. When walking on the treadmill students determine the power needed to climb plus the power that goes into body heat.
