Preparing Preservice Teachers

One way to improve teacher retention is to adequately prepare preservice teachers while they are enrolled in professional teacher education programs at colleges and universities. In a model developed at Towson University, preservice science teachers gain valuable classroom teaching experience as early as the second semester. Within what is termed the professional development school (PDS) network, preservice and veteran teachers work in unison to strengthen science education at the secondary level and enhance teacher retention rates. This article outlines the fundamentals of the program.
