Science Sampler: A student-centered project focused on obtaining clean drinking water for the community

Science Scope—December 2008

This project-based science unit, focused on a local environmental issue, created a great deal of interest and learning, as well as drew in the support of the community. The authors designed and implemented the project in a fifth- and sixth-grade classroom when they were Peace Corps volunteers in Central America. Although this project was carried out in Central America, the teaching approach is transferrable to schools in urban and rural contexts in the United States.
