Using Physical Science Gadgets and Gizmos, Grades 3–5 invites students to go beyond simply memorizing facts, to learn using curiosity-piquing devices and doohickeys; these contraptions are part of 30 activities relating to eight broad areas of physical science, including speed, friction and air resistance, and electric circuits.

With 35 experiments for middle school and 54 for high school, Using Physics Gadgets and Gizmos, Grades 6–8 and Using Physical Science Gadgets and Gizmos, Grades 9–12 feature water rockets, Drinking Birds, Dropper Poppers, Boomwhackers, Flying Pigs, and more. The grade-appropriate experiments let middle school or high school students explore a variety of phenomena involving pressure and force, thermodynamics, energy, light and color, resonance, buoyancy, two-dimensional motion, angular momentum, magnetism, and electromagnetic induction.

The phenomenon-based learning (PBL) approach is as educational as the demonstrations are attention-grabbing. Instead of putting the theory before the application, PBL encourages students to first experience how gadgets work and then grow curious enough to find out why. The result: Your students learn physics by doing what real scientists do. And with those Boomwhackers and Flying Pigs, they—and you—will find the fun in physics.
