Research and Teaching: Cultural Factors in Science Education—Variables Affecting Achievement: Exploring the Relationship Between Mathematical Knowledge and Scientific Success

Journal of College Science Teaching—March/April 1999

The course in this article is a first-semester general chemistry class with a large-enrollment lecture section of students with minimal background in chemistry at The University of Texas at San Antonio—a designated minority (primarily Hispanic) institution of higher education. The investigation was carried out with the goal of identifying the methods and/or variables that improve classroom instruction, student achievement, and retention in an introductory chemistry course.
