Observing the Sky Through the Eyes of the Ancient Mayans

Science Scope -- January 2004

Throughout history, most cultures paid very close attention to the sky. For the Mayan culture specifically, the dependable motions of the Sun, Moon, and stars and their connection to accurate calendars provided motivation to study the cosmos. Through this inquiry-based, interdisciplinary project, students are exposed to the astronomical practices of the ancients by engaging in an actual hands-on, outdoor star-watch. Several preparation activities will help prime your students for this culminating evening observation.
