Fueling Your Body

Biomacromolecules and Their Importance in the Cell

By Melissa S. Kosinski-Collins, Kathryn L. Collins

Fueling Your Body

Abstract

This interrupted case study presents a dialogue between two exercise partners, “Ciara” and “Lucia,” who have different approaches to diet and training. When Ciara questions Lucia’s strict “balanced breakfast,” a discussion ensues regarding the biological necessity of food components. The narrative guides students through the four major biomacromolecules (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids), their presence in nutrition labels, their role in the central dogma of biology, and their critical structural functions within cellular organelles. While working through the case, students are asked to connect several introductory concepts in basic biology to demonstrate how molecules, reactions, organelle structure and function, and central dogma are related. Originally designed as a review for high school biology students or for a nonmajors college-level biology course to emphasize the interconnective nature of basic biological concepts, the case could also be used in a college-level biology course for majors to review biomacromolecules and cellular composition.

Overview

Objectives

  • Identify and characterize biomacromolecules; specifically, define the building blocks, functions, and atomic composition of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids.
  • Analyze food labels to identify dietary sources of biomacromolecules and explain the distinction between such components as dietary fiber and sugars.
  • Diagram and explain the metabolism of biomacromolecules.
  • Explore the location and relationship between all four biomacromolecules in the cell.
  • Relate structure to function; specifically, predict the physiological consequences on specific organelles (e.g., mitochondria, cell membrane, ribosomes) if specific biomolecules are absent.

Keywords

Biomacromolecules; proteins; lipids; carbohydrates; nucleic acids; central dogma; organelles;
