The National Science Teaching Association Sells Arlington Headquarters Building for $14M to The FORTIS Companies

CBRE represented NSTA in the transaction, which included the sale of the entire one-acre site, including a 48,000-square-foot office building and two restaurants

ARLINGTON, Va.—January 12, 2023—The National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) today announced that it has completed the sale of its headquarters building for $14 million to The FORTIS Companies, a Washington, D.C.-based real estate development and investment company.  The northern Virginia location represents one of the last commercial development sites in the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor in Arlington. The property includes a 48,000-square-foot office building located at 1840 Wilson Boulevard with two on-site restaurants: Rhodeside Grill at 1836 Wilson Boulevard and il Radicchio at 1801 Clarendon Boulevard.

“The COVID pandemic gave NSTA the opportunity to reflect on the need for office and meeting space in the Washington, D.C., area,” said NSTA Executive Director Erika Shugart, Ph.D. “The organization was able to continue to function at a high level throughout the pandemic, while staff worked remotely and NSTA members were able to take part in many excellent virtual meetings and professional programs. After a long and thorough process and careful consideration, our board of directors decided to sell the property.”

CBRE represented NSTA in the transaction, led by Senior Vice President Dean Stiles and Senior Vice President John Sheridan.

“CBRE was pleased to have facilitated the sale of this prime office building on behalf of our client," says CBRE Senior Vice President Dean Stiles. "The property received a high level of interest from prospective buyers, and we are confident that it will be a valuable asset for FORTIS."

The office building at 1840 Wilson contains four floors with an existing underground parking garage of 136 spaces. The property is less than a quarter-mile walk to the Courthouse Metro Station and is recommended for mixed-use redevelopment within the county’s Rosslyn-to-Courthouse Sector Plan.

“Looking to the future, NSTA will continue its efforts on furthering the Association’s mission to transform science education to benefit all,” added Shugart. “We will work to provide equitable programs and strategies that empower educators at all stages of their professional journey and help to create a world where science literacy and education are recognized as vital to the future of our society.”
