Science Sampler: Environmental Service Learning—The Clean Air Zone Service Learning Project

Science Scope—December 2008

In September 2006, the Maine Green Schools’ facilitators, consisting of environmental specialists from Maine’s Department of Environmental Protection and Energy Education Program, kicked off the Clean Air Zone Service Learning Project, a campaign to reduce vehicle idling at schools and communities. This project provides an opportunity for teachers interested in looking at environmental and personal health issues to integrate science with social studies by considering the societal and health implications of air quality. In this project, students become actively engaged in the process of understanding, integrating, synthesizing, and applying knowledge as they work to improve their communities.
