Looking for an opportunity to shape College Science Teaching on a national scale?

The National Science Teaching Association is in search of a veteran educator to serve as the next Field Editor of The Journal of College Science Teaching, NSTA’s award-winning, peer-reviewed journal for university-level science teachers, published bi-monthly.

The Field Editor’s responsibilities include:

Pursue active solicitation of manuscripts: network with colleagues and other professional contacts to solicit feedback and recruit authors.
Evaluate submissions for scientific accuracy and appropriate content and invite reviews, assigning each manuscript to at least two reviewers.
Communicate with new reviewers to outline Manuscript Review Panel responsibilities.
Oversee the manuscript review process: check Manuscript Central regularly to process new manuscripts; once manuscript reviews have been received, decide on the manuscript’s status: accept, reject, or return for revision.
Re-evaluate revised manuscripts to determine if the author provided requested changes.
Send each issue’s manuscript lineup to the Managing Editor in accordance with NSTA’s production schedule.
Review final edited versions of articles and write Editor’s Note for each issue.

The Field Editor has ultimate responsibility for the journal’s content and therefore must aim to achieve NSTA’s goal of “...excellence and innovation in science teaching and learning for all.” Our expectations include the following:

Be an advocate for JCST and work to increase readership/visibility.
Attend NSTA’s national conference and contribute to meeting agendas in consultation with the Managing Editor.
Work with the Managing Editor and Publisher to develop a yearly Editorial Calendar and write a Call for Papers.
Present sessions at NSTA’s National Conference (as well as in other venues) about writing for the journal—the aim, clearly, is to stimulate an abundance of high-quality contributions from diverse sources.

This is a part-time, three-year appointment, renewable for additional terms. Travel required (usually one trip per year). Stipend and training provided.
