Going Beyond Posters of Scientists of Color: Fostering a Sense of Belonging. This panel session delves into the critical imperative of cultivating a genuine sense of belonging for all students within the science classroom. Moving beyond symbolic gestures, this thought-provoking discussion explores practical strategies to create inclusive learning environments. Participants in this session will gain insights into the nuanced ways in which a sense of belonging positively influences students' engagement and success in science; secondly, identify and dismantle systemic barriers that contribute to feelings of exclusion in science education; and thirdly, develop tangible and sustainable strategies to create a supportive and inclusive atmosphere that empowers all students, ultimately enriching the collective impact of science education.

Science for All: We’re Not Exempt from Culturally Responsive Teaching. The session embarks on a critical exploration of the necessity for culturally responsive teaching practices that are specific to science education. This insightful discourse challenges the notion that science education is exempt from the broader principles of inclusivity and cultural responsiveness. Aiming to bridge gaps and foster an environment where science is accessible to everyone, participants will engage with three primary learning goals: first, examine the significance of culturally responsive teaching and its impact on enhancing science education for diverse student populations; second, recognize and address implicit biases that may hinder inclusivity in science classrooms; and third, actively develop and implement culturally responsive strategies to ensure that science education is not only equitable but also enriching for all students, regardless of their cultural backgrounds.

In the continuation of our exploration into defining social justice in the science classroom, this second part of the session serves as the grand finale to our miniseries. The emphasis is on actionable steps that can be implemented within the realms of individual control, fostering a sense of empowerment among educators and stakeholders. By the end of this session, attendees will not only have a nuanced grasp of the principles of social justice in the science classroom but will also leave equipped with concrete plans and a commitment to introducing and upholding equitable practices. The ultimate goal is to instill a sense of accountability among all stakeholders, ensuring that social justice becomes an integral and sustained aspect of science education.
