Demonstrations are wonderful educational strategies for reinforcing and stimulating learning. They are highly instructional as well as entertaining if suitably incorporated into lectures and laboratory sessions. Unfortunately, the educational value of demonstrations may be clouded by an ignoble side. Many faculty members fail to recognize that demonstrations used in biology, chemistry, and physics have equivalent hazards as laboratory activities. This article describes some resources and commonsense procedures to help educators confidently present demonstrations safely.
