This article describes a college non-science majors’ course in which chemical concepts provide the background to the study of nanotechnology. The most helpful part of this article is a chart that provides a summary of traditional chemistry topics, nanotechnology topics, and associated laboratory activities. Even though high schools don’t have scanning electron microscope it gives a teacher a reference as to where to embed a discussion about nanotechnology in a tradition high school chemistry course.

By using the chemical principles that applied only to nanotechnology, a survey course was created for non-science majors. This is a very creative way to teach non-majors chemistry, but at the same time eliminate the science anxiety of those individuals. Technology based activities and labs were chosen to help students better understand. They also completed a short research assignment. After completing this course, they were better able to apply chemical principles.
