Editorial: Uneasy Lies the Head

Department Chairs are where the rubber meets the road—with all the pressure and friction therein implied. They are bestowed with a remarkable range of responsibilities for the department, including scheduling, budget management, long- and short-term planning, and hiring issues. They are the lightening rod for all the promises made by all of those above them. It is a heady consolidation of responsibility, to be sure. In this month’s opinion piece, the author provides some insight into this hefty role while encouraging readers to appreciate and support their own chairs.
